THE CLOSING EPISODE I’ll give you in the Manford pet soap opera was when Elwood died on Boxing Day night a couple of years later. Dad went out to feed him and he was dead in his hutch, frozen solid. We weren’t going to bother with one, but my little sister Danielle insisted we gave him a proper funeral.

Me, Dad and Stephen dug a hole in the centre of the cemetery area using dessert spoons because we couldn’t find a spade. Colin checked the CD rack for something appropriate to play, Danielle and Niall wrote a poem, ‘Ode to Elwood’, and Mum looked for some candles (well, she is Catholic). Elwood was wrapped in an old beach towel and lowered into his quite large grave, bearing in mind he was now as big and stiff as a bread bin. Then we stood there, all seven of us, Robbie Williams’s ‘Angels’ playing in the kitchen, the rain pouring down on a freezing-cold Boxing Day night. Mum, Danielle and Niall sobbing and holding candles, Dad, me, Stephen and Colin saying what a great rabbit Elwood was. Now you may not think Elwood was a particularly nice rabbit, and you’d be right. But he was family.
